Sanity Squad: Movies, Culture and Kids

February 28th, 2007 · No Comments

Oscar night is Hollywood’s annual ritual of fashion and self-congratulatory spectacle. The Sanity Squad skips the glam gowns and the glitz, and focuses instead on the influence of the movies on politics, sexuality, and even on our perception of history. The Sixties were a turning point for film and American culture, and the Squad discusses another turning point, as well: the psychological and sociological effects of abortion on demand.

“How could we not be for Rudy?”

February 27th, 2007 · No Comments

One of the early — and quite amazing — sidelights of the race for the Republican nomination for President in ’08 is how so many prominent conservatives are lining up behind Rudy Giuliani, who has perhaps the slimmest conservative credentials of any of the major GOP hopefuls.
The Republican Party has had a strong pro-life plank [...]

Al Gore wins big at the Oscars!

Oscar Musings

Okay, no liveblog this year - I’m just not motivated enough…but I do want to open a thread for various odds and ends…starting with my delight that Pan’s Labyrinth won the night’s first award for art direction.  I loved the movie (it was one of my three favorites this year, along with United 93 and [...]

Make a visit, if you get a chance, to Peter Porcupine’s site. Why, you ask? He stands firm for true conservative philosophy, and against rapscallions of all political stripes. What else could you want? He has a great post called: “A man who thinks too much about his ancestors is like a potato?the best part of him is underground. -Henry S. F. Cooper” about Romney. He also has a great post about “William Wilberforce”. Has anyone seen the movie? What did they think?

Another Blast In Baghdad

February 25th, 2007 · No Comments

This is certainly a downer:
A suicide bomber wearing a vest packed with explosives and ball bearings blew himself up at a Baghdad university today, killing at least 40 people and strewing fingers, pens, purses and bloody textbooks all over the ground.
The blast, at a campus of Mustansiriya University, was one of several bombs and explosions [...]

Gay rights

February 25th, 2007 · No Comments

The Petrilis Files: “Needless to say, I am quite happy to wake up today and find not only a personal letter in my email in-box from the brave Wyoming legislator, who just happens to be straight and a member of the GOP, who stood up for gay marriage equality and civil rights for all.

“Again, Dan Zwonitzer, you are worthy of much praise and thanks from gays, not just in the Equality State, but across the United States of America.”

? for president?

February 25th, 2007 · No Comments

Washington Post: “In one of the fastest-starting presidential campaigns in history, one group of politicians has not kept pace: the nation’s governors. The most successful route to the White House in recent elections has run through the governors’ mansions, but in the 2008 campaign, state chief executives are struggling to fight their way into the top tier of candidates in both the Republican and Democratic races.”

Thanks to Political Wire for the link.

Pew Research: “The 2008 presidential campaign has kicked off earlier than usual with more candidates than usual, but many people appear not to have noticed. Americans are no more likely to say they have given the presidential campaign much thought than they did in December, and just small minorities can name a candidate they might support.”

Thanks to beSpacific for the link.

The Right’s Field: “Strategic Vision released a poll that shows former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani ahead of the GOP pack in Iowa. The Iowa Caucuses are less than a year away. The poll was conducted February 16-18 with 600 likely Republican caucus goers with a margin of error at ±4 percent.”

Josh Marshall: “That really is pretty stunning. Quinnipiac’s new poll has Giuliani at 40% in the race for the GOP nomination. McCain clocks in at a relatively feeble 18%. And Romney, with 7%, is beat out by Gingrich at 10%.

“I’m really not convinced Giuliani can win the GOP nod as a pro-choice, pro-gay rights candidate. But numbers trump opinions.”
