Mitt Romney, Wanna Be Governor

August 11th, 2006 · No Comments

I am not sure how Massachusetts functioned without him in a crisis.  Willard is gaining praise for yet again taking control and giving Massachusetts a flash of that CEO governor we elected in 2002.  Whew, I feel better, don’t you?  I am willing to except the fact that he leaves Kerry Healey in charge nearly as often as he is because the times when he is here he is gracefully helping Massachusetts through a crisis.  Wait, is that a pattern?  Whenever Mitt comes back there is a crisis?  WAIT!  Maybe I don’t want Mitty around afterall!

Yesterday the wanna be governor canceled his political appoints to stay (or come back to, I never really know where he is) in Mass to call up the National Guard to protect Logan airport.  On display, at least in the media’s eye, was his prowess for damange control and cool-as-a-cucumber style under pressure.  How accurate is this?  Why the Mitty lovefest?  Clearly the terrorist plot was a threat but was it so immediate that Mitty deserves any praise at all?  I don’t think so, he was doing what frankly any reasonable governor should do: making sure the security of the state’s biggest, busiest airport was adequate.  However, if Mitt spent more time around here he would have known the answer to that question.

Yet again we have to stop and ask ourselves, where have you been Mr. Governor?  You constantly complain of mismanagement, you love to make jokes about us and how backwards we are (and apparently how progressive the South is, at least that is what your comment seemed to suggest).  Those lines might have worked if you were just beginning your term as gov but in reality they just make you look bad.  You only have five months left in your term so if there is mismanagement or bad government those problems would seem to pretty much fall squarely on your shoulders.  Like the line of governors before you, all of the Republican stripe, you preferred to use the office as a platform for something else.

You assumed Massachusetts is what it is so better to run for governor, where you assumed you didn’t have any real power in wake of the overwhelming Dem majorities, and prepare yourself for president.  You could be as conservative as you needed to be because you knew that the leg would check you.  Very smart Mitty.  Well you have had  your fun so I just as much prefer you to stay away and stop using us as a prop.  The failures of the last fours here in Massachusetts belong to you and I promise that the good people of Massachusetts will do everything in our power to remind the good people of the United States that.  Consider it your parting gift.
