Juicy gossip alert! There is some rumbling that Sen. Harry Reid, our esteemed Minority Leader, has indicated that he is looking to step down from the position sometime early in 2009 and that he would give his unparalelled support to Sen. Hillary Clinton to pursue the post (of what is hopefully then MAJORITY Leader). This would be a very interesting move for Cliton but I can’t help but wonder why she would want to make the move?
The majority leader position was pretty much useless until Lyndon Johnson took it over and created a significant amount of power for himself but it would seem that the power of the seat is more about who occupies it rather than in the title itself. Clinton does not strike me as someone who outwardly aggressive enough (yes, I am painting Clinton as a little timid). She, like Bill, is more of a calculator and pawn mover. However, The Washington Note does indicate that Hillary may not be as committed to running for president as the people around her. This would make a Democratic leadership position more interesting for her because she could push her agenda more. At the end of the day though I think Hillary Clinton is a toxic figure for the Party. If we put her in power, at any level in the Party, we can expect even more road blocks and heel digging than we currently deal with and who needs that?
