It seems that the recess appointment of Paul DeCamp as head of the U.S. Labor Department’s Wage and Hour Division, has set off the left. …

The Nuclear Clock Is Ticking Again
August 31st, 2006 · No Comments
If you are old enough to remember, during the height of the Cold War, the concept of the ‘nuclear clock’ was popular. The idea was that when it struck midnight, the world would blow up in a nuclear holocaust, and it was always about three seconds until midnight. Then, when the Soviet Union imploded, all [...]

Lieberman Not Expecting A Warm Welcome
August 31st, 2006 · No Comments
As the Senate prepares to reconvene after the August break, Joe Lieberman is not going to be shocked if he is not Mr. Popularity with his Democratic colleagues:
Sen. Joe Lieberman, whose independent re-election bid has rankled Democrats, says he expects a cold shoulder or two from Senate colleagues when he returns to Washington next week.
“Obviously, [...]

Colleen Carroll Campbell, of NRO, has written The Activist Trap, and I found it to relevant to many of the discussions we have had in the past. As Election Day draws near, Pope Benedict’s warning to his flock is timely and relevant:

A Deadline That Cannot Pass Unobserved
August 31st, 2006 · No Comments
The editors of the National Review have it right:
At midnight tonight, the U.N. Security Council’s deadline for Iran to stop enriching uranium will pass, but the centrifuges at Natanz will keep spinning. That Iran has defied the deadline should surprise no one. What does surprise us is that the president who swore he would not [...]

Pajamas Lands A Big Dog (Part Two)
August 31st, 2006 · No Comments
The other notable newcomer to the Pajamas stable is Claudia Rosett, who did absolutely invaluable work on the Oil-For-Food scandal and was the subject of my praise here. Claudia has taken on the U.N. time and time again, and it is no exaggeration to say that Oil-For-Food would have starved for oxygen without her efforts. [...]

PoliticsCentral @ Squidoo
August 31st, 2006 · No Comments
This week POLITICSCENTRAL is embarking on a new, unusual method of effecting social change. We’re asking you, our readers, to take a stand on a political or social issue of your choice, and in doing so help make a success of the Acumen Fund’s campaign to deliver affordable, critical goods and services that elevate the lives of the poor. Take a few minutes to write about a political, social, or cultural issue that is close to your heart, whether it’s free trade or electoral politics or the welfare system in South America. It’s free, and it’s amazingly easy. Every page that people like you create will generate revenue for the Acumen Fund, and help POLITICSCENTRAL to create a deeper level of discourse in the world of politics. To create a lens simply go to the POLITICSCENTRAL HQ @ Squidoo, and write about something you care about. We’re not asking for your money, we’re asking for your voice.

Laffey In A Laugher?
August 31st, 2006 · No Comments
RI Sen GOP Primary, Rhode Island College Bureau of Government Research and Services, Laffey 51%, Chafee 34%. Poll conducted Aug. 28-30 among 363 likely Republican primary voters.
Two caveats. First, the sample size is small, with a MoE of 5 points. Second, “The sample was proportioned among the state’s geographic regions to reflect the likely voter contribution from each portion of the state.” Predicting turnout in specific regions of the state can introduce error.
That said, there has been movement. The same poll was conducted in June, presumably with the same methodology, and had found Laffey with a three point lead.

[Native Netherlander Pieter Dorsman of Peaktalk looks at the recent traffic patterns of Dutch politics and finds jams, backups, wrecks and no real right turn in the offing. --- Editor ]
It was in the beginning of this year that The New Republic jumped on the bandwagon of classifying everything that happened in The Netherlands since the Fortuyn and Van Gogh murders as solid evidence of the small nation abandoning its left-liberal tolerance and ‘turning right’.

I’m talking Joseph and Valerie. Byron York asks the obvious question - since we now know it was Richard Armitage who first ‘leaked’ Valerie Plame’s identity, will he be sued? The answer will surprise no one who has paid attention to these attention-seeking partisans:

No, I’m not taking another one (I just got back, and after my huge, um, ‘deposit’ in Vegas, I can hardly afford to go anywhere for a while), but there is an interesting piece in the Wall Street Journal about what happens when bloggers go on vacation. The short answer? They lose traffic:
