Romney and the M Word

December 15th, 2005 · No Comments

Mitt Romney is on Neil Cavuto right now, and I must say he is fielding the questions well  —  very well. He's a good speaker, though not overly charismatic (though I think charisma is overrated when it comes to candidates).

Of course, he got the "Mormon question," which surprised me a little (I didn't expect that from Neil). He answered well, though I suspect there are more out there than he realizes who would find his religion worrisome.

I was on a conservative mailing list, and one of the reasons I left it (not the only one, but certainly important) was the Catholic-bashing by certain evangelicals. Now seriously, this is 2005, not 1955  —  and although ignorance knows no bounds (Catholics worship Mary!), it is a political list, and I do expect people to leave their prejudices and ignorance at the door.

If we run into this, God knows Romney will.

But seriously, have some respect. My parish has a weekly prayer vigil across the street from the abortion clinic; would you interrupt their prayer and try to "save" them? And what business is it of yours (or mine) what church Romney belongs to?

Like he said, Democrats have religious litmus tests.
